Importance of Performance Verification

Electronic Test Equipment on eBay – At Silicon Valley Test & Measurement, like a number other resellers, we sell a lot on eBay and along the way we’ve developed an opinion about the deals that can be found there.  The good side and the reason we and so many others in our industry are active on that platform is that it is a uniquely broad and deep market for electronic test equipment. Nearly any instrument that is available used can be found there, at least at some point, as can buyers for the same.  The downside is that people/companies dealing in used equipment run the gamut from prominent reconditioned equipment dealers and even the original equipment manufacturers themselves, to people who sell all sorts of things and who may have come into possession of complicated equipment they know nothing about.  The latter group include some who honestly classify the equipment as “For parts or not working” to alert the buyer that they don’t have the ability to fully test the equipment.  Others use statements like “powers up” or “from a working environment” to entice the buyer with the impression that the equipment is performing at specification, without having done any testing whatsoever.  Worse, in some sense, is the 30-day return period.  Basically the deal here is: “We don’t know if this equipment is working or not but you can test it for us for free and if it isn’t working properly, you get to return it at your expense”.  Maybe this is fine for hobbyists but businesses that want to save money with used equipment don’t have time or budget for this.

Importance of Performance Verification
– At Silicon Valley Test & Measurement, we test the performance of every piece of used equipment we sell that has a manufacturer published performance verification procedure.  If we don’t have the equipment to do this, the equipment does not go on our website and if sold on eBay will be marked as “For parts or not working” to indicate that we have not tested the equipment and the buyer should be prepared to repair and calibrate it.
